Career Explorer Workshop
Hands-on workshops for skills and career discovery

Are you thinking about hosting a SALT Career Explorer Workshop at your school or organisation?
Previous participants have ranged from kindergarten children to 85 year olds - we can adapt our workshops to suit almost every audience!
If you have a group of participants with specific needs, please get in touch with us ahead of time so that we can best prepare for the workshop.
If your workshop is funded by an existing funding program, the type of funding for your workshop will determine who can participate. For example, the Careers Taster Program (DTWD-WA) is for Year 9 students of all genders.
We have 2 options
- a 30 participant workshop, or
- a 15 participant workshop
Your choice may be constrained by the availability of the trailers in your area at the date you require.
For example, the 30 participant trailer will be in WA during Term 2 & 3 of 2025, and the 15 participant trailer will be available on the Eastern side of Australia during this time.
The ideal workshop space...
- Is the size of (about) half a basketball court
- Is undercover
- Has a level surface
- Does not have furniture or fixed equipment obstructing or in the space
- Is easy to drive a trailer up to or onto
- Is not a thoroughfare - as we cannot have other people walking through during the workshop
We do need...
- Access to toilets - where possible, separate toilets for participants and trainers
- Access to bins - so that we can clean up after ourselves!
Please note power is NOT required - we run fully off battery power.
The saws and sanding does make a bit of dust, but it can be easily vacuumed.
Our equipment has protective bases and does not mark timber floors.
Please provide water and a light lunch for the workshop trainers - it is difficult to carry food when travelling the distances and hours we do, to get to many locations.
We can (and do) travel all over Australia!
Our workshops are fully self-contained and mobile - all we need is a space to set up in.
The workshop itself is about 4 ½ hours (including the break) to enable participants to complete their projects.
Please see the workshop outline below for more details.
The workshop itself is about 4 ½ hours (including the break) to enable participants to complete their projects.
Set up begins 1 ½ hours prior to the workshop.
Pack down after the workshop takes about 1 hour.
One break (30 minutes) occurs 2 hrs into the workshop. This provides the best structure for conducting the workshop.
Many schools are able to negotiate with the canteen to open for the participants during the break time.
Start times are important - we begin with a safety briefing to induct all participants into the work area and activity. All participants must be here for the safety briefing in order to participate in the workshop.
Finish times are approximate and depend on the capability of the students. We find that younger students or those with higher needs require the whole allocated time, while older students generally finish at the earlier time listed.
Options for workshop start and end times are below.
Please note that not all options may be available for your location.

Safety of participants, workshop trainers and the general public is our highest priority. An extensive risk assessment and management plan is conducted for all workshop activities.
Specific conditions at each location are also monitored and included. We ask for input from host organisations and schools for this information.
The risk management plan contains measures (controls) which lower or eliminate risks associated with using tools. It includes measures such as:
- Area is cordoned off - nobody enters the workshop space unless we have inducted them.
- Some tools are only operated with one-on-one instruction and supervision by a workshop trainer.
- All workshop participants must attend the safety talk (at beginning of the workshop) and sign the risk assessment to say they agree to the safety measures
- Each workshop trainer has maximum of 6 participants - 1:6 trainer to participant ratio
- PPE - covered footwear and safety glasses must be worn at all times all day. Additional PPE such as earmuffs, dust masks must be worn for certain tasks.
All workshops trainers have a current Working with Children or Vulnerable persons for the state or territory in which they reside plus checks from states and territories in which they work for SALT conducting Workshops, if required by that State or Territory. Photo proof of these checks can be provided.
Organisations and schools make their own arrangements regarding consent to participate in workshops.
Media consent is required by SALT before any photos of participants are published. In addition
- Only one workshop trainer will be taking photos - and is very careful not to include any participants who do not consent to their photo being taken or distributed.
- Photos are only used for the purposes of promoting & documenting SALT activities. They are posted onto our social media, included on our website, and sent to funding bodies as part of our reporting procedures.
- School students are never named in the photos
- Where the school requests to review the images before sharing them, SALT is happy to collaborate with them.
BASE COSTS
The Career Explorer Workshop is available in two sizes:
30 participants – from $9,500
15 participants – from $5,400
These are base costs - additional costs such as travel, accommodation and staff will vary depending on your location. It's best to get in touch with us to discuss your specific needs, and receive a more accurate cost estimate or quote.
You may be able to reduce costs by collaborating with other local organisations, or by booking multiple workshops in the same week.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Schools are generally funded through the Career Taster Program (via the Department of Workforce and Training).
For other organisations, some funding opportunities may be open to you, for example:
Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP)
Grants for Women‘s careers
Employment services for school leavers
Trade / Industry organisations
and other sponsored programs.
We can discuss your specific requirements, provide a quote tailored to you, and can see if your organisation or school is covered under any of our current grant funding.

Are you thinking about hosting a SALT Tool Taster Activity at your event?
Previous participants have ranged from kindergarten children to 85 year olds - we can adapt our activities to suit almost every audience!
Please let us know your expected demographic, specific support needs and audience size, so we can prepare the most appropriate activity.
Each participant completes their project in about 20 minutes - with up to 15 participants being active at one time. That's about 45 participants an hour!
This estimate could vary depending on the availability of equipment or Workshop Trainers during your event - as we deliver workshops and activities year round across the whole of Australia!
When asking for a quote, please let us know your event location, event date/s, start and end times, and your expected audience size. Then we can provide you with the best estimate of cost and total participant numbers. You can share this information via our contact us form.
The ideal activity space...
- A minimum 9 meters by 6 meters
- Is undercover (e.g. three 6mx3m marquees and weights)
- Has a level surface
- Does not have furniture or fixed equipment obstructing or in the space
- Is easy to drive a trailer up to for set up and pack up
- Is not a thoroughfare - as we cannot have other people walking through during the workshop
We do need...
- Space for people to queue - we can be very popular!
- Access to toilets
- Access to bins - so that we can clean up after ourselves!
Please note power is NOT required - we run fully off battery power.
We do make some noise though - so don't put us next to a musician!
The saws do make a little dust, but it can be easily vacuumed. Our equipment has protective bases and does not mark timber floors.
Outdoor surfaces (grass, dirt) are okay so long as they are level and free of trip hazards (e.g. holes, tree roots).
We'd love some drinking water!
We can (and do) travel all over Australia!
Our workshops are fully self-contained and mobile - all we need is a space to set up in.
Most participants complete the project in about 20 minutes - there are no start and finish times, participants can join in as soon as there is space available in the workshop.
We can tailor the length of the entire activity to suit your event - the minimum is about 4 hours, but it depends on other factors.
When asking for a quote, please let us know your event location, event date/s, start and end times, and your expected audience size. Then we can provide you with the best estimates. You can share this information via our contact us form.

A cheese board!
You sure do!
We don't have time in this activity, but you can definitely paint it or decorate it at home.
If you're planning to use it to use it as a cheeseboard, make sure you research a food-safe method to decorate or care for your project - you can seal it by oiling it, with something like grape seed oil.
And don't forget to send us a photo!

Feedback from educators
Our workshops don’t just leave an impression on students — they leave a lasting impact on teachers, too. Here’s what we consistently hear from educators.
Representation and Role Models
Teachers often highlight the power of having women (and gender-diverse) tradespeople leading the workshops. Seeing diverse role models in action challenges stereotypes and opens students’ eyes to a wider range of career possibilities.
Engagement and Participation
Teachers consistently report high levels of student engagement throughout the day.
Hands-On Learning
The practical format stands out. Teachers value the chance for students to learn by doing — building projects, using tools, solving problems — all in a way that’s effective and enjoyable.
"The students were all engaged 100% of the time. Presenters were down to earth, relatable and real, which is really important for our students."
High school teacher
Supportive and Safe Environment
Teachers noted the safe, encouraging atmosphere that helped students thrive, especially those who struggle in traditional classroom settings.d
Confidence Building
A common theme is the way students grow in confidence during the workshop. Teachers see students step outside their comfort zones, take on challenges, overcome initial nervousness, and leave with a real sense of pride in what they’ve achieved.
Well-Delivered and Organised
Educators frequently praise the structure, flow, delivery and quality of the day.
Feedback from high school students
Every participant who completes a Career Explorer Workshop fills out a feedback form — we love what they have to say and are continuously improving our programs based on their feedback.
Learning New Skills
From measuring and cutting to assembling and finishing, participants develop technical skills they can see and feel. Along the way, they also build transferrable skills — like patience, focus, and problem-solving.
Social Connection and Teamwork
Working in small groups helped students feel comfortable, supported, and connected. It’s a relaxed environment where they can learn together, share ideas, and help each other succeed.
Hands-On Learning
Students love the practical nature of our workshops. Instead of sitting and listening, they get to build, create, and problem-solve with real tools and materials. It’s learning by doing — and for many, it’s a welcome change from the classroom or lecture-style activities.
Using Real Tools
Drills, saws, measuring tools — students tell us that using real equipment is one of the best parts of the experience. For many, it’s the first time they’ve picked up a power tool, and they’re proud to learn how to use them safely and confidently.
It’s Fun!
Whether it’s the tools, the teamwork, or just the change of pace — students describe the workshop as fun, exciting, and something they’ll remember. For many, it’s unlike anything they’ve done before.
"The thing that I liked the most was somebody working closely with me 😀 I am grateful for the opportunity - might have to seek more training/experience in the trades."
High school student
Positive Role Models
Several students mentioned how meaningful it was to be taught and mentored by women and gender-diverse tradespeople. This visibility shows that trades are for everyone, and that there are many ways to build a career you’re proud of.
Confidence and Psychological Safety
Some students reflected on feelings of accomplishment, boosted confidence, and gratitude for the non-judgmental, supportive environment. The encouragement from facilitators helped them feel capable and successful — even when trying new or challenging tasks.
